A handloom is a loom that is used to weave cloth with the use of any electricity. Handloom is a wooden frame, that is used to weave fabric. … Tribal families mere weave a cloth, usually a wrap. In more sophisticated states, pit loom is popular.  Looms for sarees and/or silk weaving are more sophisticated than cotton weaving looms. They require skill.

The various skills that are required for handloom are various traditional skills such as spinning, dyeing, beem bharai, designing and weaving. Pupul Jayakar had established with Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay who nurtured the “All India Handlooms Board” was established in 1952. On 27th July, this organization which has been on-going since almost 70 years, was banned.

This step has been taken as a part of the systematic rationalism of government bodies in consonance with the “Minimum Government and Maximum Governance”. Sanjay Rastogi, the development commissioner for handlooms said that. “In consonance with the Government of India vision of ‘Minimum Government and Maximum Governance’, a leaner government machinery and the need for systematic rationalization of government bodies, the Government of India has abolished All India Handloom Board with effect from the date of this resolution”, in the textiles ministry resolution dates 27th July ’20.

On January 23, 1992 the All India Handloom Board had the Union of minister of textiles as its chairman, with official members from the Central and state governments and non-official members from the handloom industry.
All these years on, it remained the one official forum, however watered down, where the voices and views of weavers and craftspeople could be expressed directly. One place where representatives of the sector were present in considerable numbers, and were actually empowered to advise the Government in policy and sectorial spending.

Thereafter, the All India Handloom Board was reconstituted from time to time. 7th August is celebrated as National Handloom day.
