According to data on quarterly estimates for greenhouse gas emissions by economic activity published by Eurostat, greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union (EU) increased by 2% in the third quarter (Q3) of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021, reaching 854 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents. The recovery of the EU economy from the COVID-19 epidemic, which resulted in a 3% growth in gross domestic product (GDP) during the same quarter, is tied to the increase in emissions.
The EU’s greenhouse gas emissions did, however, decline by 4% from the third quarter of 2019 before to the epidemic, suggesting progress towards the bloc’s climate goals. While GDP and emissions increased in the majority of EU members, some managed to according to Eurostat, to increase their economy while reducing emissions.
Manufacturing (23%), power and gas supply (21%), homes and agriculture (14% each), followed by transportation and storage, had the largest emissions in Q3 2022. (13 per cent).
