The Council for Leather Exports has elected Sanjay Leekha, as its new Chairman. The CLE stated that Leekha is the founder and chairman of the Alpine Group. The council is a trade promotion organisation of the leather and leather products industry. It works under the backing of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Over a million people are working in India’s leather industry. The share of India in global leather exports and imports is about 3%. India leather and leather product exports sinked by 26% to US$2.44 billion in fiscal 2020-21. However, the world has begin to recording growth in 2021 as export economies emerge post pandemic. Europe remains the most important export marketplace for Indian leather businesses.
