The Kerala State Women’s Commission is committed to ensuring that women working in the textile retail sector benefit from the provisions of the Kerala Shops and Commercial Establishments Act. Chairperson P. Satheedevi emphasised this point during a public hearing held in Kochi on October 17.
The hearing was organised to address the concerns of women employed in the textile industry. Ms. Satheedevi highlighted the need for textile retail stores to implement unified working hours and salary structures. She also stressed the importance of granting women workers mandatory maternity leave and other entitlements.
The Commission aims to empower women to assert their rights and create a conducive work environment. Ms. Satheedevi revealed that the Commission had already submitted recommendations to resolve various workplace issues faced by women.
She further mentioned that the Commission had received complaints about practices that hinder the creation of women-friendly workplaces. These issues were observed across diverse sectors, including television serials, contract labour, un-aided educational institutions, and teaching.
