Amritapuri (Kollam) 20th December 2024: The UNESCO Chair on Experiential Learning for Sustainable Innovation and Development, the Amrita School for Sustainable Futures, the Amrita Centre for Wireless Networks and Applications, and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham organized the International Conference on Tsunami Risk Reduction and Resilience (ICTR³), which came to an end at the university’s Amritapuri campus.
The main guest at the farewell ceremony, Goa Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, expressed his joy that such an important international conference was taking place in a little area like Alappad. He praised Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma) and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham for their efforts in skillfully fusing science and tradition in their work.
The Amrita School for Sustainable Futures’ principal, Dr. M. Ravishankar, greeted everyone. Additional speakers included Prof. Vinod Menon, a founding member of the National Disaster Management Authority; Dr. Sudha Arlikatti, Head of Research at the Amrita School for Sustainable Futures; Zoichiro Yasukawa, Chief of UNESCO’s Disaster Risk Reduction Unit; Dr. Maneesha V. Rameetham, Provost of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham; and Dr. T.M. Balakrishnan, Director of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services.
A video called “20 Years of Tsunami” was shown as part of the occasion. More than 45 delegates from 15 nations attended the three-day meeting, which started on December 13 and commemorated the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Risk management, resilience-building strategies, and tsunami preparedness were the main topics of discussion.
Expert talks, debates, workshops, research paper presentations, and exhibits were all part of the conference. Survivors shared their stories with delegates during their visits to the Alappad Tsunami Memorial and neighboring impacted communities. The event was attended by academics and students from a number of Indian and foreign universities.
