The Tamil Nadu government has recently given the green light to establish six mini-textile parks in the state, and another eight proposals are awaiting approval.
According to M. Vallalar, the Textile Commissioner of the Tamil Nadu government, more than 100 expressions of interest have been received for this scheme. Vallalar stated that the government has revitalized a dormant scheme that dates back to 2015, and it is expected to gain significant traction moving forward.
Under this scheme, mini textile parks can be developed on a minimum of two acres of land, accommodating at least three units. To encourage participation, the government is offering a 50% subsidy or ₹2.5 crores to develop common facilities within these parks. Interested stakeholders are required to identify suitable land, form a special-purpose vehicle, and provide a detailed project report.
Thus far, around 20 detailed project reports have been received for this initiative throughout the state. Particularly, there has been significant interest from Madurai, with eight projects already in the pipeline. Coimbatore, on the other hand, has experienced a slowdown in the textile industry, which has impacted the response rate. However, officials remain optimistic as interest from the district is gradually gaining pace.
To clarify the details of the scheme, Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati conducted a meeting with industry representatives on October 26. During the meeting, it was highlighted that the scheme previously demanded a minimum of 10 acres and 10 industries. However, this requirement has been reduced to attract more participants.
The scheme specifically aims to aid post-spinning operations, such as weaving, garments, and finishing, as textile spinning mills require more extensive space. Additionally, if the mini textile park is established in backward blocks of the district, the units can also benefit from capital subsidies offered by the MSME Department. Several weaving units in the Annur area have already displayed interest in this regard.
Overall, the Tamil Nadu government’s initiative to establish mini textile parks has created an encouraging response among industry stakeholders. With the scheme back in action, it is anticipated that these parks will play a significant role in fostering growth within the textile sector.
