Surat’s textile factory has teamed up with an Austrian firm to create plant-based silk.
GBM textiles’ Managing Partner, Akash Kirit Marfatia, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an Austrian yarn lenzing business that has created lyocell filament yarn that can replace conventional silk yarn.
“Traditional silk yarn is made from the cocoons of silkworms and is detrimental to the environment due to the high levels of emissions it emits. However, this yarn is made by separating cellulose from wood in a closed-loop process that leaves no residue behind “Marfatia said.
Marmfatia, of GBM, has announced the launch of a new fabric made from biodegradable yarn. He said that it is suitable for georgette, silk, satin, chiffon and crepe and will prove to be very useful for the Indian market. Marfatia expects high demand for this fabric in the coming 3-4 years with 5000 tonnes expected to be produced.
