In the Narendra Modi government’s big cabinet reshuffle and expansion on Wednesday, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal was assigned the charge of the Ministry of Textiles.

Goyal has secured the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution while losing the Railways portfolio to Ashwini Vaishnaw, a technocrat. Smriti Irani was previously the Minister of Textiles. Irani, on the other hand, kept her position as Minister of Women and Child Development.

With huge potential for garment exports at a time when the government is targeting $400 billion in shipments in FY22, Goyal’s textile ministry is expected to help him build unity with the commerce and industry ministry.

It will also assist Goyal in coordinating the export incentive schemes Rebate of State and Central Levies and Taxes (RoSCTL) for textiles and Remission of Duties or Taxes on Export Items for other products, which have both been in the works for some months.

The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has directed the allocation of portfolios among the following members of the Council of Ministers :-
