Kontoor Brands, a lifestyle apparel company headquartered in the United States, has announced the addition of its Indigood Facility Certification water-saving production initiative. The Indigood programme, which began in 2019 with the innovative emergence of foam dyed denim, has since enlarged to include additional freshwater conservation techniques used in textile industries.
The development is part of Kontoor’s strategy to minimize the company’s carbon emissions and accelerate sustainability efforts, which include setting scientific targets for carbon emissions, reducing freshwater consumption during production, rising renewable power acceptance, and shifting to self sustaining procurement of raw materials. Kontoor’s Indigood Facility Certification programme encourages textile mills around the world to embrace vastly different water-saving techniques. Textile manufacturing facilities that use 90% less freshwater than customary fabric manufacturing may be eligible for full certification, according to a press release from the company.
Through proposals such as Indigood, Kontoor Brands has saved over than eight billion litres of water as of March 2021. To broaden its effect, Kontoor Brands is analysing denim manufacturing facilities and approving those that use processes that reduce freshwater consumption. The aim of this application is to recognise and enhance industries that have reduced or are actively working to reduce their water usage. The Indigood Facility Certification programme debuted this fall with the certification of Arvind Limited’s Naroda Facility in India, the very first textile mill to be certified through the Indigood programme. Kontoor will conduct bi-annual surveys of programme participants to ensure fully compliant with certification standards.
“Indigood promotes the advancement of sustainable denim production processes.” By empowering the use of garments produced by mills that emphasise water custodianship, Kontoor Brands has filled the gap among sustainability and sourcing. “We are recognised to be the first mill to achieve the Indigood standard,” said Aamir Akhtar, CEO of Arvind Limited.
