35th GST council meet: Single return for all businesses from January 1, 2020.

The much anticipated decision on slashing GST rate on electric vehicles has been sent to a committee. A rate cut on electric charger has been approved from 18 per cent to 12 per cent. This was the 35th meeting of the GST Council and the first under Finance Minister NirmalaSitharaman. The council also agreed to introduce a single return for all businesses from January 1, 2020.

The date for filing annual returns has been extended to August 30, 2019, reiterated Revenue secretary. The council has also approved the electronic invoicing system. Helping consumers and ensuring proper revenue for state government, the council decided to introduce mandatory e-ticketing for cinemas.

The council also extended the tenure of National Anti-Profiteering Authority by 2 years. The authority deals with customer complaints regarding not receiving GST rate cut benefits. For easing GST registration, the body agreed to use Aadhaar, thereby simplyfying the process. Businesses can now use Aadhaar to register on GST portal.
The federal tax body also agreed to set up GST tribunal in 26 states. The GST law provides for setting up of benches of appellate tribunal in all states. The council also approved to set-up state & area based GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT). Some states to have more than one GSTAT.
