New Delhi: India’s garment industry is undergoing a green transformation, with factories increasingly adopting sustainable practices, the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) said on Thursday. As global focus shifts towards eco-friendly products, the industry is prioritising renewable energy, zero-liquid discharge, and other environmentally conscious measures.

AEPC Chairman Sudhir Sekhi announced these developments while leading a delegation to Tokyo for the India Tex Trends Fair. The council aims to boost India’s garment exports to Japan and attract investments into the sector.

Sekhi stated that Indian garment factories are largely ESG compliant, with a strong emphasis on renewable energy, solar power, and zero liquid discharge. He further indicated that the launch of the ‘Kasturi’ cotton brand, featuring blockchain-enabled traceability, will significantly enhance the industry’s credibility in global markets.

India’s garment sector is well-positioned to cater to a wide range of orders, from small, customised requests to large-scale production. Moreover, the duty-free access granted to Indian apparel under the India-Japan Free Trade Agreement, compared to a 9% duty for other countries, provides a significant competitive advantage.

The industry’s focus on sustainability and the government’s supportive policies are expected to drive growth in India’s garment exports and solidify its position as a global apparel hub.
