ABC Carpet & Home’s support continuous improvement in minimizing their collective environmental footprint and maximizing social justice. With increasing awareness for sustainable products many manufactures are trying to make effective use of resources. ABC Carpet & home based in Newyork is adapting this change.
“Our products are driven from and materials and process perspective. The designs are selected to match and support the raw materials and the weaving process used to create these carpets. It’s quite the reverse of how the mass market approaches the category,” said Haynes Robinson, senior vice president of product development
This spring, he continued, “the real story is more about our use of recycled materials and our unique vintage finishing techniques. The designs themselves have been selected as the best aesthetic match for the resulting textile composition.”
Rolling out at its two stores here – Manhattan flagship and Brooklyn outlet – are new curated offerings that fit into two of ABC’s core rug themes for 2020: a renewed focus on classically designed carpets in vintage or distressed finishes and the continued expansion of product development around up-cycled materials.
An example of the latter is Alchemy, a hand-woven grouping made of 100% up-cycled wool and silk materials. Traditional in design, one style is adapted from a late 19th century Persian Hamadan, in a palette of lilac and moss green; the other is inspired from a Central Asian Samarkand rug.
“[Alchemy] expresses ABC’s deep concern for sustainability and the environment,” the company noted. “By utilizing these materials each rug has its own distinct, one-of-a-kind character so that no two are ever the same.”
Hand-woven in Tibet from repurposed silk are the one-of-a-kind Prism Silk rugs. One design is 100-knot Tibetan woven and features ABC’s contemporary take on leopard print using hundreds of repurposed silk shades; the other is made in a textured striated, ribbed construction and depicts a tonal palette of earthy green and blue hues.
The vintage component to ABC’s 2020 rug themes is relayed in the classic Sabideh. Hand-woven from wool, this rug – available in accent, area and runner sizes – displays a light, muted palette of crimson and beige with hints of blue.
“Traditional design is a big trend at the moment,” the company noted. “Sabideh is a collection of vintages, early- to mid-20th century carpets which we transform through months of washing, shearing and sunning. The traditional carpet is reborn and revitalized through this unique process.”
