There is little to no transaction going place in the local currency, which presents significant challenges for the rupee settlement mechanism. This is true even though the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given banks from 18 different nations permission to open Special Vostro Rupee Accounts (SVRAs) in order to settle payments in Indian rupees.

Given that India is also an importer from the UAE, Russia is aiming to settle its rupee trade with India through the UAE. Why not allow the rupee to be liquidated against supply from the UAE, a person with knowledge of the situation asked to be anonymous when speaking about the idea.

The individual who was quoted above, however, emphasised that at the moment, even Indian exporters favour foreign exchange because they are paid a forward premium. A currency’s predicted future value is higher than its current value. The three-way settlement, according to some experts, functions better in theory than in practise.

We buy more from Russia than we export, so if you enter the rupee currency settlement, say rupee-rouble commerce, it is unlikely to succeed. Consequently, if you are re-routing through a third country, any two countries wishing to trade in non-strong currencies could succeed. Nonetheless, all of these transactions are feasible to the point that the second country can conduct business with the third country using payments. Russia would not know what to do if we gave them a lot of money.
