Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, has developed a physically and chemically independent network of flame retardants inside cotton fibres, avoiding a problem commonly found in flame retardant cotton textiles, which can release formaldehyde and be uncomfortable to wear. According to Empa, the technique preserves the beneficial characteristics of cotton fibres.
