Margaret Seaman, from Caister, Norfolk, has been knitting every day since April 1. The project which is modelled on the emergency Nightingale hospital is more than half done.
Using her knitting needles she has started to raise funds for hospitals in the UK. She is knitting ‘NHS Knittingale’ which will have an A&E department, cafe and visiting room. It will be of the size of a double bed when it’s complete.
The nonagenarian has already completed three wards, visiting rooms and knitted patients. She is now working on completing gardens, car parks, emergency departments and the cafe.
“I wanted to do something to help,” she told BBC.
The project has used over 20 balls of wools and her stock of “bits and pieces” collected over the years.
The money collected from the fundraising page which has been set up for donations will be given to three hospitals in Norfolk.
The elderly woman plans to put the finished hospital on display after lockdown. She is also considering to auction it.
While the project has been keeping Seaman busy all day long, her daughter Tricia Wilson, 72, says that the project is everywhere in their house. “It’s keeping me busy and means I don’t get bored at home all day,” she said.
“It’s everywhere – in every room, on the floor, my bedroom, her bedroom. But my mum likes to do things properly and she doesn’t care how long it takes,” Wilson said. Seaman has previously knitted Great Yarmouth seafront and Sandringham House to raise funds.
