The global textile industry, including India’s flourishing sector, has been adversely impacted by the relentless spread of the coronavirus pandemic. While various sectors encountered setbacks during this time, the Indian textile industry faced severe productivity, operations, and employee relations disruptions due to its vast supply chain dependency.

Over the past few years, India’s textile industry has witnessed a significant decline, particularly in the domestic garment market. Orders were cancelled, and the industry failed to secure fresh orders, resulting in tremendous hardships for the workforce. Consequently, millions of skilled and unskilled labourers had no choice but to return to their native villages and towns.

Industry leaders are urging the government to consider their demands and provide support to counter these challenges. Import duty relief on cotton, especially during the off-season, has been proposed as a temporary relief. Additionally, investment in research and development is crucial to enhance the industry’s efficiency and sustainability in cotton production. This strategic move would create new job opportunities, drive exports, and revive the economy.

The revival of the textile industry is of utmost importance, given that “cloth” is one of the three essential needs for human life. As such, it is hoped that the government will extend its maximum support to revamp the industry and restore it to its former prosperity.
