Gucci, a high-end fashion house, is introducing an animal-free leather alternative. Demetra, a novel mainly plant-based material, is already being used to manufacture three shoe styles. The new material is made using the same tanning techniques as Gucci’s leather and is described by the business as “soft, robust, flexible, and sumptuous.” It is produced exclusively in Tuscany, Italy, in Gucci’s facility.
The Gucci New Ace and Gucci Rhyton sneakers, the first two Gucci items created with Demetra, go on sale tomorrow. Demeta is used to make the bulk of the uppers and a portion of the linings of these goods. Organic cotton, recyclable steel, and recycled polyester are among the other materials used. Manufacturing waste will be upcycled as part of the company’s Gucci-Up initiative to promote circularity.
