Following several written submissions from major industry organisations – including the SAC (Sustainable Apparel Coalition) and Primark – being published, the work being undertaken by a UK parliamentary committee set up to assess the role of ‘fast fashion’ has been now brought into the mainstream public’s consciousness.
In June, Ecotextile News reported that the UK Environmental Audit Committee had launched an inquiry into the social and environmental impacts of the ‘fast fashion’ culture which, it believes, has become an integral part of both the apparel industry and wider society.
Now, courtesy of these submissions being made publicly available and the subsequent debate they have engendered, the challenges facing the fashion and apparel sector are being laid bare, with serious, meaningful debate appearing to have been stimulated.
