Nike has collaborated with biotechnology startup Newlight Technologies to adopt AirCarbon, a carbon-negative biomaterial made from microorganisms found in the water.
Noel Kinder, Nike’s chief sustainability officer, stated, “Materials account for 70% of our total carbon footprint, and we’re accelerating efforts and exploring new opportunities in this space because, in the race against climate change, we can’t wait for solutions; we must work together to create them.”
Made up of organic microorganisms that eat air and greenhouse gases (GHGs) from the ocean, and convert them into carbon inside of their cells. Nike’s adoption of the material is deemed in line with the firm’s ongoing sustainability work.
“AirCarbon offers an opportunity to further reduce our impact on the planet,” said Kinder, CEO of Newlight.
