Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani virtually inaugurated upgraded Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) of 18 MLD zero liquid discharge at Balotra (Rajasthan). This is one of the biggest processing clusters in Rajasthan.
The project, supported by Union and Rajasthan State Government under Integrated Processing Development Scheme (IPDS), has cost of Rs. 131.89 crore.
The plant will help in maintaining ground water levels by providing alternate resource to 700 processing units in the region thereby saving livelihoods and bolstering opportunities for textile industries.
Notably, units of Balotra will now be able to fully utilise their capacity.
Kailash Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Parsadi Lal Meena, Minister of Industry Development and State Enterprises, Rajasthan and many entrepreneurs of Balotra’s textile industry were present at the occasion.
Balotra Water Pollution Control Treatment and Reverse Osmosis, Balotra Water Pollution control Treatment and Research foundation trust are the bodies behind this initiative.
Water Pollution has been one of the main issues in the textile industry hub Balotra as time and again The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has been taking strong action to prevent pollution caused by the industry in the region.
A report by an NGT-formed joint committee, made public on 12 April 2021, also said that textile units at Bhituja Industrial Area in Rajasthan’s Barmer district continue to pollute groundwater and the adjoining Luni river.
