The Tiruppur textile cluster, a major contributor to India’s knitwear exports, is experiencing a resurgence after a challenging 2023-24 fiscal year. The cluster, which had faced an 11% decline in exports, has bounced back with a 13% increase in the first five months of the current fiscal year, driven by a renewed focus on sustainability and increased global demand.
Green Initiatives Drive Growth
A key factor behind this turnaround is the cluster’s adoption of the ‘Green Tiruppur’ initiative. This comprehensive sustainability strategy has made the region more attractive to international buyers who prioritise eco-friendly practices. By investing in zero liquid discharge, green energy, and tree plantations, the cluster has significantly reduced its environmental impact.
Global Brands Show Interest
The growing emphasis on sustainability has attracted major global brands such as Primark, Tesco, Tommy Hilfiger, Marks & Spencer, and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products to place orders with Tiruppur-based manufacturers. Additionally, companies from the US, Europe, and Australia have also shown increased interest in the region.
Overcoming Challenges
The textile industry in Tiruppur, like many others, faced numerous challenges in the past year. The geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainties, and supply chain disruptions impacted global trade. However, the cluster’s resilience and strategic focus on sustainability have enabled it to weather the storm.
A Bright Future
With a strong foundation in sustainability and a growing order book, the Tiruppur textile cluster is poised for continued growth. The region’s commitment to eco-friendly practices and its ability to adapt to changing market dynamics position it as a leading global player in the textile industry.
