In a decisive move to curb water pollution, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) took stringent action against textile dyeing factories operating behind the ACA Stadium at Barsapara. During an inspection conducted on Monday, it was discovered that three factories were discharging untreated wastewater directly into the Mora Bharalu River, posing a significant environmental threat.
The GMC’s swift response resulted in the immediate sealing of two factories found to be in gross violation of environmental regulations. Additionally, a penalty of Rs 40,000 was imposed on the third factory for its non-compliance. This action underscores the GMC’s commitment to safeguarding the city’s water bodies and ensuring adherence to environmental standards.
The textile industry, while a major contributor to the local economy, has often been criticised for its detrimental impact on the environment. Untreated textile wastewater, laden with harmful chemicals and dyes, can severely contaminate water bodies, leading to the degradation of aquatic ecosystems and posing risks to human health.
