JUNE OVERVIEW
- Picking is now well progressed inmost areas with many farmers now finished
- All gins are now operating and shipping is picking up pace after a slow start
- Grade is mixed due to rain received prior and during harvest
- Positive of the rainfall is improved prospects for 2025 crop size
2024 CROP UPDATE
- It is estimated that 75% of the 2024 Australian cotton crop has now been picked
- Improved conditions have enabled many farmers to complete harvest and most are expected to be finished
in the next few weeks - Yields have been a little mixed but expectations are still for a crop of approximatley 4.7 million bales (1.07
million MT)
2024 QUALITY UPDATE
- Approximatley 25% of the 2024 crop has been classed to date
- The grade so far has been quite mixed with cotton from some areas showing the effects of rainfall at harvest
- It is still too early to make any predictions of what the break up of grade will be
- Length and strength appear to be very good while micronaire is reported to be a little on the higher side
SHIPPING & EXPORTS
- Early shipments were delayed as result of the rain received across growing areas
- Shipping is well under way and will soon reach its peak from all areas
- Strong demand has been reported from Vietnam, China and India
- The spread of grades in this year’s crop will likely result in Australian cotton being attractive to a wider range of buyers
- Bales shipped for the month of April totalled 296,000. (This would have been predominantly old crop stocks.)

GLOBAL MERCHANTS COME TOGETHER FOR A UNITED COTTON INDUSTRY
The American Cotton Shippers Association, the Brazilian Cotton Shippers Association (ANEA) and the Australian Cotton Shippers Association have signed a landmark memorandum of understanding. This agreement recognises the positive contributions of the production and consumption of cotton to global economic development and supply chains. The goal is to ensure the long-term economic and social vitality of their respective industries in the countries they represent through a collaborative approach to global industry issues.
At the signing of the Memorandum, American Cotton Shippers Association President/CEO Buddy Allen remarked, “We are the fiercest of competitors, but as producers of the best cotton grown in the world, we come together to ensure that cotton remains the universal fibre of choice.”
The memorandum was signed and formalised at the American Cotton Shippers Association Annual Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona on June 14. It aims to establish dialogue to identify issues of shared interest, strengthen mutual understanding, and provide opportunities for the exchange of ideas and information.
Representing the Brazilian Cotton Shippers Association (ANEA), President Miguel de Faus stated, “We are excited to develop areas and methods of cooperation with the aim of building stronger awareness among consumers and policymakers about the positive contributions of the production and consumption of cotton in global markets.”
Tony Geitz, Chairman of the Australian Cotton Shippers Association added, “The merchant communities in the US, Brazil and Australia – and indeed the wider cotton communities they represent, welcome the opportunity to work as one. We aim to lead discussions around policy making and global supply chains to ensure cotton remains in high demand.”
Cotton’s natural benefits, including its environmental sustainability, health and comfort advantages, versatility, and economic impact, make it a superior choice compared to synthetic fibres. The group hope their efforts in coming together will have a positive impact on the global uptake and use of cotton.
