WWI & Ministry Celebrate National Handloom Day

Whistling Woods International (WWI), India’s leading institute for Film, Communication & Creative Arts, joined hands with the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, to celebrate National Handloom Day with a vibrant tribute to India’s textile heritage. The event blended live craftsmanship, cultural storytelling, and modern design innovation to honour the artistry of Indian handlooms.

Hosted at the WWI campus, the celebration offered students a unique opportunity to witness the intricate processes of handloom weaving firsthand. Master weavers from across the country demonstrated their skills on century-old looms, guiding audiences through the journey from spinning yarn to weaving finished fabrics. This live experience provided invaluable insights for aspiring designers into the depth of skill, patience, and tradition behind each creation.
Highlighting the collaboration, Hemant Gupta, Deputy Director, Designs, Weavers’ Service Centre, stated, “We chose to partner with Whistling Woods International because it bridges traditional artistry with cutting-edge design education. By engaging with these passionate students, we are ensuring that India’s handloom legacy finds relevance and reverence in the contemporary design world.”
The programme also included a live broadcast of the Hon’ble President of India’s address, which emphasised the cultural and economic importance of handlooms. This message inspired students to view heritage as a base for future innovation.
The event concluded with a Handloom Fashion Showcase, where WWI Fashion Design students presented modern silhouettes crafted from traditional fabrics, and was complemented by energetic dance performances that celebrated India’s artisanal vibrancy.
Meghna Ghai Puri, President of WWI, remarked, “Every thread tells a story; every weave carries the soul of our nation’s heritage. This extraordinary partnership brought centuries of artistry alive for our students. When young designers learn directly from master craftsmen, they become the custodians of our cultural tapestry, ensuring that future creations carry the legacy of generations past.”
This celebration underscored the crucial role of creative institutions like WWI in preserving, promoting, and reinventing India’s traditional arts within today’s dynamic global design environment.
