The Centre’s strategic focus extends beyond conventional textile development, encompassing advanced Sportech, Smart Textiles, Agro Textiles, Protective Textiles, and sustainable material solutions. This multidisciplinary approach has enabled WRA to become a preferred destination for industries seeking product incubation, pilot-scale manufacturing, and technology transfer.


A major strength of the WRA CoE Sportech lies in its state-of-the-art pilot plant infrastructure, which offers an integrated facility for end-to-end product development. Unlike many institutions that focus solely on research or testing, WRA provides a complete innovation ecosystem capable of supporting ideation, prototyping, process optimisation, and pilot-scale production. The facility is equipped with advanced warp knitting machinery, including Tricot and Raschel knitting systems, weft knitting machines for single and double jersey fabrics, warping and weaving facilities, miniature spinning systems, yarn doubling machinery, and hot melt coating and lamination technology. This wide spectrum of equipment enables the development of highly specialised textile products across multiple technical applications.


One of the most distinctive features of WRA’s incubation centre is its dedicated braiding and twisting infrastructure. This facility includes heavy-duty ring frames, vertical braiding machines, horizontal braiding machines, and bobbin preparation units that allow the production of sophisticated braided, twisted, and corded structures. Through this setup, WRA has successfully developed a diverse portfolio of high-performance products, including braided cords, twisted ropes, twines, parasailing cords, mountaineering ropes, and sport shoe laces. Manufactured using high-tenacity polyester and nylon yarns, these products are produced in diameters ranging from 2 mm to 16 mm while meeting stringent international quality and safety standards. Such capabilities not only strengthen India’s domestic manufacturing ecosystem but also open opportunities for global competitiveness in sportech and defence-related textile products.


The true significance of WRA’s CoE lies in its ability to drastically reduce the time, cost, and technical challenges associated with product development. By offering diverse manufacturing technologies under one roof, WRA allows innovators to seamlessly move from concept to prototype without the need for fragmented external resources. WRA is working closely with the startups and entrepreneurs in the areas of New age fibres, Sport Textiles, Medical textiles, Nano Fibres, Smart textiles, Agro textiles, etc.  Under the NTTM initiative, WRA has successfully supported several high-impact projects that reflect the vast potential of technical textiles across sectors. These include nanofiber-infused smart fabrics for energy generation and sensing applications, high-performance sports gear for high-altitude adventure and defence applications, biomaterial-based textile products for healthcare, cosmetotextiles and wellness textiles based on unconventional Indian natural fibres, and smart wearable systems such as continuous heart rhythm monitoring vests for arrhythmia detection. These innovations highlight how technical textiles are evolving far beyond apparel to address critical needs in healthcare, defence, sustainability, and wearable technology.


In addition to government-supported innovation projects, WRA is increasingly being approached by industries and private enterprises for product incubation, technology development, and commercialisation support. This growing trust from industry reflects WRA’s reputation as a reliable partner for translating ideas into scalable industrial solutions. The Centre is currently incubating multiple start-ups in advanced sportech, agro textiles, sustainable protective textiles, and eco-friendly product domains, further expanding its influence across India’s technical textile value chain.
