One of the challenges highlighted by Singh is the prevalence of blended materials in textiles—such as cotton-polyester blends—which complicate recycling processes. He stressed that moving towards monomaterials (single-material products) would simplify recycling efforts and enhance sustainability. Blended materials require advanced sorting techniques to separate different fibers before they can be recycled effectively. Singh explained that while Panipat has developed efficient methods for sorting blended materials manually, scaling these processes remains a challenge due to limited infrastructure.

In discussing India's position within the global textile market, Singh pointed out that India’s recycling capacity stands at an impressive 69%, far surpassing global averages (which hover around 19-20%). However, challenges remain due to high raw material costs and import duties. He compared India's situation with countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan:

  • Bangladesh benefits from duty-free status but relies heavily on imports for trims, cotton, cloth, and thread.
  • Pakistan has good production capacities but faces political instability and security concerns that hinder growth.

Singh emphasised that India’s unique advantage lies in its vast cotton production capacity and skilled workforce. However, policy barriers such as high Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for cotton and monopolies in synthetic fiber production need to be addressed to maximise India’s potential.

  1. Expansion of Recycling Hubs: Establishing more facilities across India dedicated to recycling textiles.
  2. Creation of Green Jobs: Aiming to generate one million jobs focused on sorting and upcycling textiles.
  3. Advocacy for Circular Economy Policies: Promoting policies that support sustainable practices within the industry.

Singh also proposed creating an Indian recycled cotton brand mark comparable to the Woolmark certification. Such branding would enhance customer trust and position India as a leader in sustainable textiles globally.

Addressing Post-Consumer Waste

Singh acknowledged that post-consumer waste remains one of the biggest challenges for the industry due to difficulties in collection and sorting. He explained that large-scale infrastructure is needed to manage this type of waste effectively. Sorting post-consumer waste involves separating fibers based on content (e.g., cotton vs polyester) and color (e.g., navy blue vs black). However, achieving scale requires significant investment in technology and workforce training.

Innovations Beyond Textiles

He has established one of India’s most affordable plant-based food brands while implementing Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) and Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) practices across industries.
