The Dye Alchemist: Exploring Colours, Textiles, and Healing

Marking the celebration of National Handloom Day on August 7, 2025, Dr. Ela Manoj Dedhia’s book The Dye Alchemist: Exploring Colours, Textiles, and Healing was ceremoniously launched at the Textiles Committee, Mumbai, by the Honourable CEO of KVIC. The release brought together eminent designers, textile experts, industry representatives, academics, NGOs, and students, making it a landmark event dedicated to India’s handloom and natural dye traditions. Published by Anveshanam Foundation, Mumbai, the book is the result of years of meticulous research. It documents 145 commercially important natural dyes in India, detailing their botanical names, geographical distribution, dye-yielding parts, colours obtained, and medicinal properties. Illustrated with pictures for easy identification, it serves as both a scientific guide and a cultural treasury that links natural fibres, healing knowledge, and sustainability. The book emphasises the urgent relevance of eco-friendly, plant-based dyeing practices in a world grappling with the environmental and health hazards of synthetic dyes. At once a reference work, a design resource, and a sustainability manifesto, it appeals to dyers, dyestuff students, health professionals, artisans, and agricultural experts alike. Speaking at the event, the CEO of KVIC noted that the book is “a timely reminder of the skill, artistry, and cultural heritage that India’s handloom sector represents,” and an inspiration for future generations to carry forward this legacy. The Dye Alchemist stands as a bridge between tradition and innovation, advocating for sustainable colours and healing wisdom rooted in India’s natural heritage.
