Tamil Nadu Targets USD 72 Billion in Merchandise Exports by FY2027, Plans FTA Facilitation Cell

State aims to increase merchandise exports from USD 59 billion to USD 72 billion while supporting MSMEs, first-time exporters and local producers through improved access to Free Trade Agreements.
Tamil Nadu has set a target of increasing its merchandise exports from USD 59 billion to USD 72 billion by the end of FY2027. The state also plans to establish a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) facilitation cell to help industries, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and first-time exporters, navigate international markets.
The government will introduce a separate target for services exports, develop Kanchipuram as India's top exporting district and upgrade export testing centres under the Export Promotion Mission.
Tamil Nadu Explores Opportunities Under FTAs
These initiatives were outlined at a state-level workshop on leveraging India's FTAs to create global market opportunities for Tamil Nadu industries. The workshop was organised by the State Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade in Chennai on Friday.
The event was attended by more than 400 participants, including exporters, women entrepreneurs, MSMEs, trade associations, farmer producer organisations, and Central and state government officials.
Discussions focused on helping industries, farmers, artisans and local producers benefit from trade concessions and market access available under India's FTAs.
Sector-Specific Sessions Address Export Opportunities
Industries Minister S. Keerthana stressed the need to leverage trade agreements to improve the global competitiveness of industries. The discussions covered export growth, diversifying export markets and products, and ensuring that the benefits of exports reach every district.
Six sector-specific breakout sessions were held, covering textiles and apparel; agriculture, food processing and marine products; leather and footwear; gems and jewellery; engineering; automobiles and auto components; and electronics and technology hardware.
Financial and Risk Management Support for Exporters
Representatives of ECGC, NABARD and banking institutions discussed financial facilities, credit guarantees and trade risk management support available to exporters.
Keerthana also released a handbook containing 100 frequently asked questions on exports.
The workshop formed part of the government's broader ambition to transform Tamil Nadu into a USD 1.5 trillion economy by 2036.
