Taiwan Strengthens Position in Technical Textiles Through Innovation and Sustainable Manufacturing
Industry shifts toward high-performance materials, circular solutions and advanced functional fabrics as global demand accelerates
Taiwan is expanding its presence in the global technical textiles market by focusing on advanced materials, sustainable manufacturing and high-performance functional fabrics. As international demand grows for performance apparel and circular textile solutions, the country's textile industry is strengthening its role as a supplier of engineered materials for sportswear, outdoor apparel, workwear and urban utility fashion.
Taiwan's textile industry has increasingly shifted its focus from traditional contract manufacturing to the development of advanced technical textiles and engineered materials. The industry is responding to changing global market requirements by investing in high-performance fabrics designed for applications including sportswear, outdoor clothing, workwear and utility apparel.
According to a 2026 report by USD Analytics, the global functional apparel market is projected to reach US$843.1 billion by 2035, driven by increasing demand for features such as moisture management, thermal regulation, abrasion resistance and circular material systems.
At the same time, evolving sustainability regulations—particularly within the European Union (EU)—including Digital Product Passports (DPPs) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements, are encouraging brands to improve product traceability, recyclability and material selection throughout their supply chains.
Taiwan has positioned itself to address these market changes through its vertically integrated textile industry and technical manufacturing capabilities. According to the Taiwan Textile Federation and Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs, the country is promoting itself as a centre for sustainable, high-performance and technologically advanced textiles through the Textile Export Promotion Project (TEPP).
Several Taiwanese manufacturers are expanding their product portfolios with advanced textile technologies.
Hwa Fune Industry Co. Ltd. has introduced Porlite® 2.0 fabrics that combine water repellency, breathability and abrasion resistance while incorporating recycled and biodegradable raw materials, including materials recovered from marine waste. The company's manufacturing approach also focuses on lower-energy and non-toxic production processes.
The sportswear segment continues to create opportunities for technical textile suppliers. According to IMARC Group, Taiwan's domestic sportswear market is expected to record steady growth through 2034, supported by increasing consumer interest in health, athleisure and sustainable performance apparel. At the same time, Taiwanese manufacturers continue supplying advanced textile materials to international apparel brands.
In the outdoor and performance apparel segment, PALTEX COMPANY LTD develops technical fabrics for activities such as sailing, skiing, hiking and cycling while also serving the growing urban-performance apparel market, where garments are designed for everyday commuting, travel and outdoor activities.
Demand for durable textile products is also influencing product development. TDI TEXTILE CO. LTD. has developed Athena Protect, an abrasion-resistant fabric intended for workwear and protective clothing applications where extended product life is an important consideration.
Taiwan's expertise also extends beyond fabrics into engineered materials and textile components.
Top Gear Leather Co. Ltd. manufactures seamless PU synthetic leather and multi-backing lamination technologies for footwear, bags and performance accessories. WILD BEAR TECHNOLOGY CO. LTD. develops TPU and TPE functional materials for bags and apparel requiring lightweight, flexible and weather-resistant properties.
Similarly, JUNMAY LABEL MFG CORP applies its jacquard weaving expertise to produce textile structures for footwear uppers and bag applications, supporting manufacturers seeking lightweight construction, durability and design flexibility.
Sustainability remains a major focus across Taiwan's textile sector. The Ministry of Environment is promoting mono-material garments and textile circularity initiatives to improve recyclability and fibre-to-fibre recovery. According to the Taipei Times, the ministry has encouraged the adoption of mono-material construction and recycled inputs to address recycling challenges associated with mixed-fibre garments.
Industry observers note that future competitiveness in textiles is increasingly linked to the ability to combine material science, durability, circularity and manufacturing efficiency. Taiwan's textile sector continues to expand its capabilities in these areas while supplying advanced materials to global apparel and technical textile markets.
