Sigma Advanced Systems Wins USD 104.9 Million Export Order for 155mm Base Bleed Artillery Shells

Hyderabad-based company to manufacture and supply 147,000 extended-range 155mm artillery shell bodies for a North American customer over the next 6–12 months.

Sigma Advanced Systems Limited ("Sigma") has received a USD 104.9 million (roughly INR 1,013 Cr.) export order from a North American customer to manufacture and supply 147,000 units of 155mm base bleed artillery shell bodies. The shells are currently in high demand globally, and the company plans to complete the order within the next 6 to 12 months.

The order follows Sigma's continued investment in research and development and the expansion of its manufacturing capabilities. After previously securing contracts for 155mm fuzes and M107 artillery shell bodies, the company has moved to manufacturing base bleed shells, which combine aerodynamics, energetics, propulsion-related technologies, and systems engineering within the projectile.

According to the company, this progression is part of its strategy to expand its capabilities in artillery ammunition manufacturing while strengthening its engineering expertise and programme credentials for long-term global customers.

The programme covers the production of precision-engineered artillery projectile casings intended for integration into extended-range ammunition systems. Unlike conventional artillery shells, base bleed shells incorporate a gas-generating unit at the rear of the projectile that reduces aerodynamic drag during flight, increasing the effective firing range while remaining compatible with existing 155mm artillery platforms used worldwide.

Strategic Significance

The company said the order comes at a time when defence organisations across multiple regions are increasing investment in artillery modernisation, ammunition stockpiling, and extended-range fire support capabilities. Sigma stated that its manufacturing capability for high-precision artillery systems positions it within a global supply chain experiencing sustained demand from allied and partner nations.

Sigma said the order is expected to be margin accretive and contribute to an improvement in overall profitability. The company also stated that the programme strengthens its position as an export-qualified manufacturer in the international artillery ammunition supply chain and is expected to support future engagements with customers and partners in overseas markets.
