The SCALE Project, a flagship European initiative driving the sustainable industrialization of microalgae, has successfully concluded after four years of cross-border collaboration among 11 partners across four countries. Coordinated by Microphyt, the project aimed to establish a sustainable European value chain for high-value microalgae-based ingredients in sectors such as food, supplements, cosmetics, and animal nutrition.

The project’s centerpiece is Microphyt’s advanced facility in Baillargues, France, which uses proprietary photobioreactor technology. This plant achieved record productivity levels and is fully compliant with food and cosmetic safety standards (FSSC 22000 and COSMOS). It implements eco-friendly technologies including solar energy and wastewater recycling.

SCALE has resulted in the launch of several innovative ingredients:

  • PhaeOptim™: Supports cardiovascular and bone health.
  • BrainPhyt™: A cognitive enhancer with peer-reviewed studies.
  • DunaPure™ & Luteana™ Scalp: Cosmetic actives for skin and scalp health.
  • ZenGut™: FDA-approved gut-brain axis supplement for digestion and emotional balance.

Key partners such as CHANEL, Hedelab, Lallemand, and the LYFE Institute helped translate scientific advances into market-ready products. SCALE also hosted workshops, participated in over a dozen international events, and enhanced awareness of microalgae’s industrial potential.

Looking ahead, Microphyt’s facility will continue scaling production. The SCALE project has firmly positioned Europe as a leader in sustainable microalgae biotechnology, with its digital legacy accessible online for the next two years.
