Bioworks and Goldwin introduce PlaX pile fleece after three years of innovation

Bioworks’ plant-derived synthetic fiber PlaX enters the market through THE NORTH FACE and NEUTRALWORKS, following an intensive three-year development and testing phase.

Bioworks Corporation (Head Office: Soraku-gun, Kyoto; CEO: Koji Sakamoto) has officially announced the first commercial rollout of “PlaX,” its proprietary plant-based synthetic fiber developed by modifying PLA. This breakthrough material makes its market debut through two of Goldwin Inc.’s leading brands—THE NORTH FACE and NEUTRALWORKS. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Takao Watanabe).

Background of the Bioworks–Goldwin Collaboration

Bioworks and Goldwin have been co-developing PlaX-based materials since 2022. With the release of Goldwin’s Fall/Winter 2025 collections, outerwear made from PlaX pile fleece is now available under both THE NORTH FACE and NEUTRALWORKS.

To prepare the material for commercial use, the two companies engaged in an extended, meticulous development cycle. A major focus was ensuring PlaX met Goldwin’s strict standards for durability, dyeability, and overall performance. This involved refining yarn processing techniques, adjusting material design, and conducting repetitive prototyping in close partnership with textile manufacturers and dyeing specialists.

After nearly three years of continuous testing and quality enhancement, PlaX successfully achieved the performance level needed for practical application, paving the way for its adoption in the 2025 season.

Looking ahead, Bioworks and Goldwin plan to deepen their joint efforts in material innovation and product development. By expanding the use of PlaX across more categories, Bioworks aims to support sustainable manufacturing, reduce the environmental impact of fashion, and contribute to a more circular textile economy.
