The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC), and the Design and Technical Craft Council (DATCC) have announced an upcoming showcase from May 1 to 3, 2026, marking the debut of Padma Doree—a textile that merges India’s rich heritage with modern innovation. Aligned with the vision of Make in India, Padma Doree represents more than a material; it reflects a refined blend of culture, sustainability, and craftsmanship.
Developed across two culturally significant regions, the fabric brings together diverse textile traditions and generational expertise. It represents a thoughtful revival, where heritage techniques are preserved, reinterpreted, and elevated within a contemporary design framework.
At the heart of Padma Doree is a commitment to responsible production. The fabric is created using natural dyes rooted in traditional dyeing methods, offering depth and environmental sustainability. An advanced isothermal process enhances durability, comfort, and adaptability, combining scientific innovation with time-honoured craftsmanship.
The textile also embraces a non-violent silk approach, ensuring that silkworms are not harmed during production. This ethical method reinforces its alignment with ecological balance and conscious design principles.
Beyond material innovation, Padma Doree plays a vital role in sustaining artisan communities. Through collaborative efforts, the initiative supports traditional craftsmanship while enabling sustainable livelihoods, ensuring that heritage skills continue to thrive in modern markets.
The upcoming showcase will highlight:
- The journey of Padma Doree, from raw material to finished textile
- Integration of natural dyeing, isothermal processes, and ethical silk practices
- The fusion of two textile traditions into a contemporary fabric language
- The role of design in bridging preservation and innovation in Indian textiles
Reflecting on the unveiling, the team behind Padma Doree shares, “Padma Doree is conceived as a tribute, to the hands that create, the cultures that sustain, and the future we collectively shape. It is an endeavour grounded in respect, intention, and quiet innovation.”
The event marks a significant milestone, positioning Padma Doree as a distinctive textile innovation that honors India’s legacy while shaping its future. It will bring together designers, media, and cultural patrons for an immersive introduction to a fabric defined by both meaning and craftsmanship.
