Okhai Launches Contemporary Ajrakh Collection Inspired by Traditional Craftsmanship

New collection developed with artisan designer Mubin Khatri reinterprets Ajrakh through modern silhouettes and sustainable techniques
Okhai, a CSR initiative of Tata Chemicals, has introduced a new Ajrakh collection inspired by one of India’s oldest textile traditions, believed to date back to the Indus Valley Civilisation.
Developed in collaboration with artisan designer Mubin Khatri and his team in Dhamadka, Kutch, the collection combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary fashion elements across 19 garments.
Okhai unveils Ajrakh collection blending heritage craft with modern design
Okhai has launched Ajrakh, a contemporary apparel collection rooted in the traditional textile art form associated with the Kutch region of Gujarat.
The collection was developed over eight months in partnership with artisan designer Mubin Khatri and his team in Dhamadka, Kutch. It features 19 garments designed using a combination of heritage techniques and updated silhouettes intended for contemporary wardrobes.

Made using breathable cotton and cotton twill fabrics, the collection incorporates natural dyes and traditional methods including pothai, a hand-painting process using natural colours.
The range moves beyond conventional block-printing practices by experimenting with separate use of outlines and filler blocks to create varied patterns and placements. The collection also introduces Ajrakh work on twill cotton denim, presenting a different application of the craft.
Speaking about the launch, Manorath Dhillon, who has worked extensively with Indian Crafts and is currently heading Okhai said, “Ajrakh is a craft deeply rooted in history and community. Through this collection, we wanted to explore how it can evolve for contemporary wardrobes while preserving its authenticity.”
The collection focuses on sustainability through the use of natural fabrics, natural dyes, and the reuse of existing blocks to help reduce material waste.
According to Okhai, the initiative is part of its continued efforts to support Indian crafts while adapting them for present-day consumers.
The Ajrakh collection is available across India exclusively through Okhai’s website.
