NTPC Green Energy and Assago Industries sign MoU for green urea project in Andhra Pradesh

NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) and Assago Industries Pvt. Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop India’s first indigenous Green Urea production facility at the Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub in Andhra Pradesh. The project will use renewable-based inputs to establish a domestic green fertilizer value chain.
NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a subsidiary of NTPC Ltd., and Assago Industries Pvt. Ltd. have entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop and operationalize India’s first large-scale Green Urea production ecosystem at the Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub in Andhra Pradesh.
The MoU was signed in the presence of senior officials and leadership teams from NGEL, NTPC, and Assago.
Under the agreement, NGEL will supply Green Ammonia, CO₂, renewable power, and other utilities to Assago to support the production of Green Urea using renewable feedstock. The collaboration is intended to enable fertilizer production based on green hydrogen and associated green inputs.
India currently consumes about 35 to 40 million tonnes of urea each year, with imports estimated at 8–10 million tonnes annually. Imported urea is subject to price volatility, foreign exchange outflows, geopolitical supply risks, and reliance on carbon-intensive fertilizers.
The NGEL–Assago partnership aims to address this dependence by establishing a domestic Green Urea value chain based entirely on renewable hydrogen and green ammonia.
The Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub is planned for a capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per annum of green chemicals, including Green Methanol, Green Ammonia, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and Green Urea. Assago Industries will be among the first private companies in India to initiate Green Urea production at scale using renewable ammonia and captured CO₂.
The collaboration is positioned to support fertilizer self-reliance, decarbonization efforts, and the development of the green hydrogen corridor in Andhra Pradesh, while aligning with national priorities related to sustainability and domestic manufacturing.
