West Bengal’s textile industry is set for significant expansion following a successful Synergy & Business Facilitation Conclave held in New Town. Entrepreneurs from North 24-Parganas pledged Rs 4,100 crore in 16 investment proposals, with projections indicating a potential influx of Rs 8,500 crore in the coming years, creating an estimated 150,000 jobs.
A key focus of the conclave was the development of textile infrastructure. The Ashoknagar and Banipur Integrated Textile Park, spanning 49 acres, has seen land allocation to 25 entrepreneurs, promising Rs 210 crore in investment and 1,500 jobs upon completion. Further bolstering the sector is the near completion of the Common Facility Centre (CFC) for the Naihati Bori Cluster. With civil construction finalized and machinery procurement underway, the Rs 2.47 crore facility will benefit 2,500 individuals involved in this traditional textile craft.
Modernization of existing textile production is also underway. A private company has invested Rs 40 crore in installing 125 high-speed airjet power looms, sizing, and processing machines, creating 70 direct jobs and numerous indirect opportunities. This initiative falls under the state’s Powerloom Promotion Policy, signalling a commitment to upgrading technology within the sector.
Recognising the importance of market access, a state-of-the-art textile haat has been established in Jaigachi, Habra Municipality. This six-story, L-shaped complex, built at a cost of over Rs 17 crore, houses 900 stalls on 0.45 acres, providing a permanent and improved trading space for local textile merchants.
The conclave also highlighted broader industrial development with in-principle approval granted for two industrial parks under the Scheme for Approved Industrial Park (SAIP), covering 57 acres and attracting a projected Rs 150 crore investment. While not exclusively textile-focused, these parks contribute to the overall economic growth of the region and may offer further opportunities for textile-related businesses.
These developments, driven by the state MSME department’s ongoing conclaves, demonstrate a concerted effort to revitalize and modernize West Bengal’s textile industry, promising economic growth and significant job creation.
