In a significant meeting on Saturday, the Tiruppur Exporters Association (TEA) presented a memorandum to the Textile Secretary, Rachna Shah, and Joint Secretary Rajeev Saxena, outlining key demands to bolster the region’s textile industry.

The TEA highlighted the urgent need for government support in several areas, including:

  • PLI 2.0: The association called for the introduction of a second phase of the Production Linked Incentive scheme to provide a much-needed boost to the industry’s competitiveness.
  • IIT in Tiruppur: Establishing an Indian Institute of Technology in the region would foster innovation, research, and skilled manpower development.
  • Extension of IES and Coimbatore Metro Rail: The TEA requested the extension of the Interest Equalization Scheme and the Coimbatore Metro Rail to Tiruppur to enhance connectivity and support the industry’s growth.

During the meeting, the TEA showcased its commitment to sustainability through a video presentation. The association highlighted its initiatives in Zero Liquid Discharge, green energy generation, education, healthcare, and recycling.

President K. M. Subramanian announced a remarkable 13% growth in readymade garment exports for August and a 17.5% increase in knitwear exports for July 2024. He emphasised the industry’s ambitious goal of achieving a turnover of ₹1 lakh crore by 2030, building on the current achievements of ₹35,000 crore in exports and ₹30,000 crore in domestic business.

The TEA sought the Textile Ministry’s support in branding Tiruppur as “Green Tiruppur” and requested assistance in establishing a dedicated Tiruppur Knitwear Pavilion for the upcoming Bharat Tex 2025 exhibition.

In response, Textile Secretary Rachna Shah commended Tiruppur’s sustainability efforts and acknowledged the industry’s challenges, including issues related to the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS). She assured the TEA that the Ministry would address these concerns through a special outreach program scheduled for October 25.

The meeting also explored opportunities to enhance Tiruppur’s competitiveness in the global market by boosting the production of man-made fibre garments.
