CHENNAI: A 10-member gang plundered a textile showroom at Washermanpet on Sunday, apparently to settle scores with the owner following a dispute over paying Pongal bonus. The showroom had engaged some men at 500 a day to solicit customers. These men demanded 5,000 as a Pongal bonus, which the shop owner refused to pay.
Then the discontented workers started abusing customers visiting the showroom. The management filed a complaint and the police detained a few youths, but let them off after taking an undertaking a few days ago.
Those who were detained at the police station and a few others barged into the showroom on Sunday and ransacked the shop. A staff member who tried to stop them was attacked and injured. He was admitted to a private hospital and later shifted to the Government Stanley Hospital. Police have collected the CCTV camera footage and launched a hunt.
