With the addition of the plastic-free Desi Pak® ECO moisture adsorbing packets to its line of ethically mined, highly adsorbent natural clay solutions that aid manufacturers and distributors in preventing sealed packaged goods from moisture damage, Clariant, a specialty chemical company with a focus on sustainability, further improves the environmental impact of desiccants.

The cutting-edge new moisture-absorbing packets are constructed of bio-based paper with water-based inks and glue that is created from sustainably sourced raw materials. They are filled with carefully chosen high-grade granulated bentonite clay, which is responsibly sourced, minimally processed, and offers highly efficient moisture adsorption compared to synthetic alternatives in the most typical packaging conditions. They are available in standard packet sizes of 1-, 2-, 5-, 10- and 33-grams, as well as custom sizes.Controlling moisture is crucial to the supply chain in maintaining the integrity and quality of goods that are susceptible to moisture and humidity. According to Ryan Grauer, Head of Sales, Marketing, & Technology, Cargo & Device Protection, Clariant Adsorbents & Additives, “moisture-related damage has a known environmental impact, causing waste through rejected items and emissions associated with replacing damaged goods. We are pleased to provide clients with the option of bio-based paper packets that deliver the dependable protective performance of our naturally occurring, highly-adsorbent bentonite clay desiccant, in response to the growing need for packaging solutions with smaller carbon footprints.

The most recent addition to Clariant’s extensive line of Desi Pak desiccant packets & bags, the New Desi Pak ECO packets, bears the EcoTain® certification, which honours goods with exceptional sustainability benefits. On the Desi Pak ECO product, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was conducted. demonstrated that the responsibly-mined bentonite clay had a smaller carbon footprint and less energy consumption compared to synthetic desiccants because of a less sophisticated production process based on desiccant produced in the United States. Water usage for the manufacture of raw materials is also much reduced.

Clariant expanded the sourcing of raw materials with a lower environmental impact to include transport packaging in order to further assist clients in lowering their own Scope 3 emissions. Desi Pak ECO is transported in recyclable cartons that use raw materials sourced from sustainably managed plantations. Additionally, CDF (cobalt-dichloride free) humidity indicator cards are supplied with Desi Pak ECO.

The use of Desi Pak ECO packets helps to effectively control moisture while lowering carbon emissions from product production and transportation. packaging materials for a wide range of applications. Examples include clothing and textiles, automotive, machinery, tools, as well as nutraceuticals, and foods. On request, Desi Pak ECO packets are available with clay desiccant that complies with relevant U.S. FDA (21 CFR) and with U.S. Pharmacopeia USP <670> testing requirements for Auxillary Packaging Components.
