Textile Institute Bangladesh hosts memorial lecture

The Textile Institute Bangladesh Section (TIBS) held a Memorial Lecture in honor of Engr. A. S. M. Shahid on 18 May 2024 in Banani, Dhaka. Shahid, a respected textile engineer, passed away in January 2009, leaving behind a notable legacy in the industry.

Engr. Shahid was a pioneer in the field of textile engineering in Bangladesh, serving as the first Fellow of the Textile Institute and bringing the UK royal institution to the country for the first time. He was one of the founders of the Institution of Textile Engineers and Technologists. The event featured distinguished speakers and was chaired by Prof. Dr. Engr. Ayub Nabi Khan, Chairman of TIBS.

The distinguished speakers at the memorial lecture for A. S. M. Shahid emphasized his role in building the textile sector and encouraged the new generation to follow his example of honesty and integrity. Prof. Dr. Mustafizur Rahman praised Shahid as a true professional who embodied high standards of ethics and excellence throughout his career. Shahid believed in the importance of integrity in textile engineering and demonstrated a commitment to doing what was right, even when it was difficult. Prof. Dr. Engr. Ayub Nabi Khan urged others to be inspired by Shahid’s work and continue to uphold his legacy by contributing to the industry with the same care and dedication. Shahid’s colleagues and peers remembered him as a role model for the engineering community, highlighting his contributions and unwavering principles in the field.

Late A.S.M Shahid was born in 1938 in Bancharampur, Bangladesh. He completed his education in Textile Engineering at Osaka University in Japan. During the Pakistan regime, he worked in industrial corporations, later becoming the first graduate textile engineer in Bangladesh. After Bangladesh’s independence, he played a significant role in the formation and improvement of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation.
