A significant boost for Telangana’s textile sector is underway, with the state government placing substantial orders for saris and other fabrics, totalling millions of meters of cloth. This initiative promises to inject much-needed vitality into local weaving communities, particularly in Sircilla.
The Telangana State Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society Limited (TSCO) confirmed that the government has commissioned a staggering 4.24 crore meters of fabric. A key component of this is the Indira Mahila Shakti Sari scheme, which will see 65 lakh uniform sky-blue polyester saris, adorned with gold zari borders and crafted from twisted yarn, distributed to members of self-help groups (SHGs). The deadline for this initial order is set for April 30th.
This large-scale order aims to provide significant work for local weavers and bolster the state’s textile industry. In addition to the sari order, various organizations have placed orders for 65.67 lakh meters of fabric designated for school uniforms and other stitching projects.
Recognizing the need for long-term support, the government has taken several key steps: a ₹50 crore investment has established a new yarn depot, ensuring a stable supply of raw materials, and ₹500 crore in pending dues across various departments have been cleared, providing immediate financial relief to the industry.
Ashok Rao, General Manager of TSCO, stressed the critical need for modernization within the Sircilla textile industry. He emphasized that upgrading machinery and focusing on the production of high-quality, contemporary products are essential for remaining competitive in both domestic and international markets and effectively fulfilling both government and private orders. This modernization push is seen as crucial for the industry to achieve self-sufficiency and sustainable growth.
Government officials, including Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Handloom and Textiles Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, and Vemulawada MLA and Chief Whip Aadi Srinivas, have been lauded for their unwavering support in securing these vital orders. These combined measures are expected to drive significant growth within the Sircilla textile industry, creating new economic opportunities and strengthening its position within the broader textile landscape. This initiative represents a significant investment in the future of Telangana’s textile heritage, weaving a brighter future for its artisans and the industry as a whole.
