Background
“Salem” in Tamilnadu is one of the largest pockets of handloom weavers concentration in the country. Traditionally this region is known for the production of cotton sarees, dhotis, angavastram and such fine count verities on a handloom. One of the two institutes of Handloom Technology started in the sixties was located in Salem, precisely for the reason that this region was historically known for the skillful art of handloom weaving and for the high concentration of handloom weavers. The region has the requisite spinning activity to meet the fine count yarn requirement and has the dying facility with the know-how for dying cotton yarn with fast color. Salem is situated 330 kms from Chennai on the Salem Coimbatore national /railroad and is well connected by rail and road with Chennai and Bengaluru.
