Frankfurt, 26 July 2024 – The businesses that make up the VDMA Textile Machinery Association provide their thoughts on the ambitious EU requirements and how they should be implemented nationally to transform the textile and apparel industries in a sustainable and circular manner. Their position paper was released today.

Chemicals, energy, and water are only a few of the many resources needed to produce textiles. Verena Thies, the deputy chairwoman of VDMA Textile Machinery, stated, “The members of VDMA Textile Machinery support customers with products worldwide to utilise great potential already at the textile production stage to thereby reduce CO2 emissions.”

The importance of circular economies, effective systems, and legally binding regulations for all market players is emphasized in the position statement. In addition, the position paper provides an overview of the current state of the procedures for recycling textiles into new textiles and the requirements for reprocessing recovered materials. The businesses that make up VDMA Textile Machinery create recycling technologies and processes as well as the technical requirements needed for the effective reuse and recycling of textile raw materials, whether they are made of natural or synthetic fibers.

The Executive Board of VDMA Textile Machinery also emphasizes the need for reasonable goals, quantifiable outcomes, and minimal bureaucracy in the creation of the new EU circular economy legislation and their national implementation. In addition, market surveillance is required to guarantee fair competition for every market player.

In order to considerably improve the sustainability of the textile industry, the VDMA Textile Machinery Association advocates on behalf of the sector for improved location circumstances in Germany and the EU as a favorable environment for innovation and competitiveness for the manufacturing of textile machinery: The Textile Machinery Association highlights how important it is to have access to a variety of affordable green energy sources in order to deploy and sustainably use recycling solutions in the manufacturing sector. In addition, the association believes that favorable location factors—such as the availability of skilled labor, a decrease in red tape, expedited approval processes, investment security and predictability, and lower taxes—are essential for fostering sustainable business practices in the fiercely competitive textile and apparel sector.

Equipment and technologies for recycling textile manufacturing waste, textiles, textile auxiliaries, or waste heat, as well as for turning recovered materials into textiles, are part of the production program and services provided by members of VDMA Textile Machinery.
