The Amsterdam-based company Avantium is working with Auping, Monosuisse, and Antex to create yarns for mattresses that are derived from its PEF (polyethylene furanoate). Antex, a company situated in Anglès, Spain, will supply multifilament yarns for the project, while Monosuisse, a company based in Emmen, Switzerland, will manufacture monofilament yarns.

Using the resulting PEF-based materials, Auping, a recognized B Corporation with headquarters in Deventer, The Netherlands, will test the design and produce mattresses. By 2030, the company hopes to have a completely circular product line. As part of an independent project, it has already created a mattress design, manufacturing, and recycling process that is certified Cradle-to-Cradle.

According to researcher Geert Doorslag, Auping “constantly works to reduce environmental impact as part of our sustainability roadmap.” “We’re constantly searching for new and sustainable methods to improve our sleep products, and PEF-based materials provide special environmental advantages. We are eager to collaborate with Avantium, Antex, and Monosuisse to create circular Auping mattresses using yarns derived from PEF.”

PEF is made entirely of biobased material using Avantium’s patented YXY technology, which can be used to any biomass feedstock that contains carbs. The effective chemical-catalytic technology of YXY may be utilized to transform these carbohydrates into a variety of bioplastics.

Director of business development at Avantium Bineke Posthumus stated, “We are set to transform the textile landscape by leveraging Avantium’s technology and the combined expertise of our partners.”
