OrganoClick, a leading developer of chemical formulations and licenses for sustainable textile production, has been granted Vinnova-funding of SEK 1.3 million for further development of its fluorocarbon-free (PFAS-free) textile impregnation OrganoTex within the R&D project, POPFREE. The project will start in September 2020 and continue for two years.
Partners within the POPFREE-project are the outdoor-companies Bergans Nordic and Houdini sportswear, RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden), IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, the International Chemical Secretariat (ChemSec), and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, according to a press release by OrganoClick.
The POPFREE-project started three years ago with the aim of developing and investigate chemical substitutes to PFAS. OrganoClicks PFAS-free and biodegradable textile impregnation OrganoTex has been partly developed within the previous project steps. The technology that has been developed is based on OrganoClick’s patented and awarded technology for modification pf textile fibres and is completely free from perfluorinated compounds (PFAS), cyclic siloxanes and isocyanates which is often used in current textile impregnation. Many of these substances are suspected to be carcinogenic and hormone disruptive and bio accumulate in nature. In this project, the ambition is to further develop OrganoClick’s current biodegradable and partly bio-based product and make it 100 per cent bio-based which would be completely unique in the market of textile impregnation’s, according to a press release by the company.
“Vinnova’s funding of POPFREE strongly supports the phase-out PFAS from Swedish products which we think is very important. That we together with companies such as Bergans and Houdini as well as organisations such as the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, ChemSec, RISE and IVL are given the opportunity to develop and test a 100 per cent bio-based and biodegradable textile impregnation will be the next step that will give us to not only a PFAS-free product but also will take the technology for textile impregnations to a new level in which also the fossile raw material is replaced with a completely green, renewable raw material,” Mårten Hellberg, CEO of OrganoClick said.
