101 export-oriented leather units’ back and running after DIC waves green flag

Kanpur: The district Industries Centre (DIC) granted permission to around 101 export oriented leather units to run their business, this gave the leather industry of Jajmau a booster.

Permission to start production of 24 export oriented leather units were granted by the DIC. So far, the industries department had issued work orders to 125 units. The sources in the industries department indicated that the tanneries too might get permission to start production in the next phase.

Joint Commissioner Industries Sarveshwar Shukla stated that export oriented leather units had been granted and work orders would soon be issued. After the receival of the report by population control board, the permission would be granted to the industries department for the process of opening tanneries.

SB Franklin, the regional pollution control board officer said, “the board has already started verification of tanneries and there are all possibilities that the unit which are outside the hotspot area might get permission to operate, but for that they have to give certificate that they had contributed in raising the 20 mld sewage treatment plant.”

Since the Kumbh Mela was held in Prayagraj the tannery industry is passing through a difficult phase. Non-availability of chemicals and raw materials are also the reason behind their suffer. Their affliction have increased in the lockdown period as their products could be shipped from the ports and the raw materials reach in the rotten condition.

Since the orders of the overseas traders have been locked in ports having their raw material almost destroyed they cannot give payments to the leather units, said regional chairman, Concil for Leather Export, Jawed Iqbal. “In fact they are suffering double loss. The permission to open export oriented units will give a new lwase of life to the leather industry”, he added.

UP industry minister Satish Mahana stated that production in export oriented unite had started and soon tanneries too would get permission for the same.
