Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently emphasized India’s vast tourism potential across emerging sectors such as wedding destinations, natural healing, and the burgeoning “concert economy.” Speaking at the Utkarsh Odisha conclave, aimed at promoting the Make in India initiative, he underscored the country’s rich offerings in spiritual, faith-based, heritage, and pilgrimage tourism. With increasing global interest in India over the past decade, Modi noted that these sectors present significant opportunities for revenue generation and job creation.
During his address, Modi described eastern India as a pivotal growth engine for development, particularly highlighting Odisha’s historical significance as a trade hub in Southeast Asia. He recalled how Odisha’s ports once served as gateways to India and celebrated the ongoing cultural connection with Southeast Asia, referencing recent visits from leaders of Indonesia and Singapore to explore heritage collaborations.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the ASEAN countries are keen on strengthening trade ties with Odisha, further enhancing its economic prospects. He also discussed India’s potential in various industries, including artificial intelligence, food processing, petrochemicals, port-led development, fisheries, IT, edu-tech, textiles, and green energy.
Focusing on the “concert economy,” Modi highlighted the lucrative opportunities arising from live performances and events. He cited the successful concerts of international artists like Coldplay and local star Diljit Dosanjh as evidence of India’s growing concert culture. “With a vast pool of young talent and a massive audience for concerts, India has great possibilities for a thriving concert economy,” he stated.
Modi urged states and private sectors to invest in developing infrastructure and skills necessary to support this burgeoning sector. This includes event management, artist development, security arrangements, and more. He asserted that global curiosity about India’s heritage—encompassing spirituality, natural beauty, and ancient architecture—positions the country as an attractive destination for tourists.
In Odisha specifically, Modi noted the state’s natural assets—such as its coastline and forest cover—offer immense potential for eco-tourism and adventure tourism. He reiterated India’s focus on initiatives like ‘Wed in India’ and ‘Heal in India,’ which align with Odisha’s unique environment.
Looking ahead, Modi announced that India will host the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) for the first time in February 2025. This event aims to showcase India’s creative talent on a global stage while generating revenue and shaping perceptions about the country’s cultural offerings.
As India’s tourism sector continues to evolve, the Prime Minister’s vision highlights a strategic roadmap aimed at positioning India as a leading global travel destination by 2047. The emphasis on diverse tourism avenues not only promises economic growth but also aims to create millions of jobs across various sectors.
