Microban, a leading name in industry, is proud to be the global leader in antimicrobial, odour control, and advanced surface disinfection solutions. It has announced a new range of antiviral technologies that are proven to reduce viral loading* on products and surfaces. Pending regulatory approval in specific territories, these technologies can be utilized in the treatment of many different substrates and products – both hard and soft.

Laboratory studies have shown that Microban’s new line of antiviral technologies inactivate/reduce tested viruses by 99% in two hours. Strong antiviral efficacy has been demonstrated through international test methods for treated articles:ISO 18184 Textiles: Determination of antiviral activity of textile products. ISO 21702: Measurement of antiviral activity on plastics and other non-porous surfaces. Tests against numerous viruses have been completed

Beyond proven efficacy, there are strict regulatory requirements in North America for making antiviral health claims. In general, this requires registration of the product itself as a pesticidal product. This is a multi-year investment that is resource-intensive. Microban’s regulatory team can help you with this should you choose to partner with Microban in the treatment of your products.

Only Microban antiviral technologies that are registered with US EPA and are/will be EU BPR compliant are being offered for sale. In the US, antiviral technologies may only be incorporated into products that are or will be registered with the US EPA. Beyond proven efficacy, there are strict regulatory requirements in Europe for making antiviral health claims. In general, this requires registration or authorization of the product itself as a pesticidal/biocidal device or product, but this needs to be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

If registration or authorization is required, this could be a multi-year investment that is resource-intensive. There can be alternative routes that do not require this approach. Microban’s regulatory team can help you with this should you choose to partner with Microban in the treatment of your products.

Microban’s new antiviral technologies may have application in/on the following product types:

Polymeric articles and coated metals: Suitable for use in many applications across various sectors, such as consumer, healthcare, industrial, and building products.

Textile goods: Suitable for use in apparel, footwear, medical nonwovens and scrubs, work uniforms, home textiles including bedding, mattresses, and towels, and accessories such as non-surgical masks and gloves to make them extra resistant against degradation by microorganisms.

Washable fabrics: Microban antiviral technologies are effective for at least 25 washes at 100°F/38°C.

*Antiviral efficacy may vary depending on substrate type, application dosage of the treatment, impurities, and application procedure.
