World Trade Center Mumbai, in collaboration with the All India Association of Industries (AIAI), hosted an interactive meeting with a high-level business delegation from the Economic Development Board (EDB) of Mauritius.

The meeting was timely, given that Mauritius remains one of India’s top contributors to foreign direct investment (FDI), accounting for 17% of India’s FDI equity inflows — USD 8.34 billion — in FY 2024-25.

Addressing Indian business leaders, Mr. Seewraj Nundlall, Director, EDB, emphasized that Mauritius is a secure, treaty-compliant, and investor-friendly jurisdiction offering unique advantages for those seeking to access emerging global markets, particularly Africa. He highlighted Mauritius’ network of bilateral trade agreements with India, African nations, the EU, UK, China, UAE, and the US, positioning it as a global hub for trade and services.

“If you're looking for a gateway to Africa, Mauritius is your best place. It's a jurisdiction that adheres to international best practices and opens doors to preferential market access,” Mr. Nundlall stated.

He underlined four key growth pillars — Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology, Renewable Energy, and Advanced Technology — demonstrating Mauritius’ focus on building an innovation-driven economy.

Mr. Veepre Kureeman, Manager, Global Outreach – Asia Desk, EDB Mauritius, highlighted that despite Mauritius’ small population (around one million), it provides access to nearly 75% of the global market due to its strategic location.

The delegation also stressed the benefits of the Mauritius Freeport, which facilitates trade and re-export with value addition. Products processed or manufactured in Mauritius benefit from preferential access to major consumer markets, especially Africa and the United States, where they enjoy lower tariffs than exports from India.

Mr. Iqbal Oozeer, Managing Director, Currimjee Jeewanjee & Co. Ltd., reinforced this by stating, “Mauritius offers beyond its borders to Africa. This is the next step Indian businessmen need to look at.”

In her welcome address, Ms. Priya Pansare, Director, Trade & Investment Promotion, WTC Mumbai, highlighted the deep economic partnership between India and Mauritius, built on mutual trade, investment, and cooperation that supports India’s engagement with Africa.

Ms. Sangeeta Jain, Senior Director, AIAI, who felicitated Mr. Nundlall, mentioned that AIAI operates the Indo-Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and announced that WTC Mumbai and AIAI will soon lead a business delegation to Mauritius to further strengthen bilateral ties.
