Toray Advanced Composites has provided lightweight structures for the Mars 2020 mission ‘s essential modules, which seeks to discover evidence of life on the Red Planet. Such materials facilitate the capsule’s secure passage into the atmosphere of Mars and the ensuing spacecraft explorations. On July 30th the 2020 Mars mission was successfully launched.

For the important modules of the Mars 2020 project, Toray Advanced Composites has created lightweight frameworks which aim to discover proof of life on the Red Planet. These materials allow the safe passage of the capsule into the Mars environment and the spacecraft explorations to proceed. On July 30th the 2020 Mars mission was successfully launched.

The components were used on prior NASA missions to Mars spacecraft, such as the Curiosity and Spirit Rovers, thanks to their rich space heritage, “the firm added.

Composite products intended for space must fulfill rigorous criteria to ensure successful flights. We will withstand elevated temperatures, be highly lightweight, have poor intake of moisture, strong rigidity and poor CTE and off-gassing properties. For these purposes, Lockheed Martin selected Toray high-modulus cyanate ester prepreg to sustain the structure’s heat shield.

The Mars 2020 spacecraft was successfully unveiled on July 30 and is scheduled to arrive on the Red Planet in February 2021. Two months after Perseverance lands, the Ingenuity helicopter will be deployed and will operate for 30 days in order to learn to see if a flying machine can operate on Mars. Perseverance should spend two years studying the environment and hunting for past life signals.
